Photo Friday-ish

As you are probably aware, I’m in Las Vegas. Being in Vegas makes one a bit lazy about certain responsibilities. One such responsibility is updating this here website.

I am going to remedy that now. In fact, as I said previously, I’m going to try and post a few photos here on Fridays. Yes, I know it’s Saturday already, no need to write in.

Let’s just pretend it’s Friday for a minute and say I got these posted a couple hours ago, okay? Thanks. You’re a sport.

Also, I don’t know what any of these photos mean. I just took them when the mood struck. Plus, I’m always trying to improve and take photos using pretty much only the iPhone 4S.

Oh, on that subject, I picked up one of those lens attachments today (Friday) for the iPhone 4S. It’s the one from Olloclip. Haven’t had a chance to use it much but will be over the next few days/weeks. Stay tuned for a full report and the resulting photos.

In the meantime, enjoy.

One More Thing

Well, it’s really more than one. Occasionally when I’m bored, or avoiding work, writing or whatever, I check out a site called The Chive. If you’ve seen it, you know what it is. If not, maybe you’ll check it out sometime.

For those of you who don’t know and don’t want to check it out, let’s just say I like to go there sometimes because once in awhile a guy just wants to see pictures of girls in yoga pants and random people doing random, and often strange, things. And did I mention the yoga pants? I think I did. Okay.

Case in point on the random tip are the photos below. I had a distinct reaction to each of them. I will leave it you you to guess what that reaction was.

I also included these photos because I may start highlighting some random photos here every friday. Or, who knows, maybe more often.

Okay, continue with enjoying your Friday/Weekend.

SoCal

Today is a nice day to be in Santa Monica, CA. I won’t lie to you, it’s pretty amazing. Here’s a little picture to illustrate.

2012 Update: Balance and Taking More Photos

As I’ve said before, I don’t make resolutions. However, for 2012 I decided to at least make some decisions about how I’m going to do things and how I’m going to live my life.

So far, it’s going well. I’ve managed to be more productive and also managed to enjoy some quality time doing as little as possible. I’m well on the way to achieving that balance I was looking for.

Another thing I would like to do more of in 2012 is take photos. With the iPhone 4S it should be very easy. The camera is great and there are several apps that help to make the pics look cooler. One is Instagram, which is what the pic above is.

I highlighted some of those apps and some of my latest photos in an earlier post. Now that 2012 is here, I’m going to be doing more with these apps and trying to take a few photos each day.

I’ve done this experiment before (taking a photo a day for thirty days I mean) and it seemed to go well. I will try to make it last longer this time around. We’ll see how it goes.

How’s your 2012 going so far?

Behind the Scenes of 'Blade Runner' with Sean Young

sean-young-photos-blade-runner

I don’t think it’s much of a secret that I’m a film nerd. I love movies of all genres but have a special place in my heart for sci-fi. Among my favorites is Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner.

The film, an adaptation of Phillip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," made quite an impression on me as a young man. I saw the film at a rough cut screening in San Diego after having won tickets on a local radio station and was treated to a version somewhat different from the finished product. It was a great experience.

I've watched the film so many times since that day and each time I still see something new in it. It was definitely before its time and not something soon to be repeated -- any potential reboot/remake notwithstanding.

One of the stars of the film is Sean Young. She played Rachel, the replicant who thought she was human. During my travels in Hollywood I almost worked with Sean on a film but she ended up doing it and I ended up dropping out. At least I had the pleasure of meeting her once during pre-production.

She could not have been nicer during the meeting and towards the end even put up with a few Blade Runner questions from me that had absolutely nothing to do with the project we were talking about at the time. I enjoyed that meeting very much.

Recently, Sean put up a bunch of polaroid photos of her, and others, taken during the Blade Runner shoot. They are pretty cool and show a lot of my favorite actors as their younger selves. They also give us a glimpse into the friendship and bond that takes place during the making of a film.

I've often heard people in the business describe the filmmaking process as like going to war. You have a mission and you have a group of people all working together to reach a common objective. I've never been to war nor do I ascribe the same significance to filmmaking as I do to the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform.

However, I get what they mean. Long hours, sometimes difficult working conditions and a sense that you're isolated except for the rest of the people working with you can lead to that esprit de corps often talked about in military circles.

I've experienced the bond and friendship that comes from hours, days, weeks and months "in the trenches" and often it is an amazing experience that you keep with you for the rest of your life. It's one of the things I miss most about working in the business, on set, helping to create something.

Still, I do like what I'm doing now. Writing is, in some ways, much harder. But is also very rewarding when you know you've done a good job on something. As you often work alone, you don't develop the camaraderie and bond as you would on set but the sense of accomplishing and creating something is certainly there, and often more pronounced.

No, I don't think I would change how things are now. I've got my memories of the good times and I'm still great friends with many of my comrades in arms. For me, those are enough.

Some New Pics, New iPhone 4 and Some Cool iPhone 4 Photo Apps

I've recently returned from the land of Android (and the HTC Incredible) to the land of iPhone 4 and IOS. To be honest, it's great to be back. Not that the Android platform isn't cool, it is.

It's just that the iPhone and iOS 4 are cooler. Case in point is all the great applications you can use to take some really cool photos with your iPhone 4.

I've been using quite a few of them and in particular Hipstamatic, Instagram, Plastic Bullet and Camera Bag. These apps, and the included Camera App from Apple on the iPhone, allow me to take and make some pretty cool photos. Sure, I can still take "normal" photos as well, but using these Apps is way more fun and the photos often turn out way different and better than you expect.

To demonstrate, I've included a few here from the new iPhone 4. Some are taken with Hipstamatic, some were taken with the iPhone's native Photo App and then processed in Plastic Bullet or Camera Bag and some are just normal. Check 'em out.

As I get better at taking pics and discover more of what these Apps can do I will post some more here as well as the usual places like my Facebook and my Flickr.

Phoebe Cates Is Number One

phoebe-cates-fast-times-icon-1

How I didn’t see this before I’ll never know, but apparently the site Mr. Skin rated the all-time best nude scenes in movies and one of my favorite actresses of all time was number one. I’m talking about, of course, Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

To a young man such as myself, Cates represented all that was awesome about girls and helped start us on the way to manhood. I’m very happy that many others obviously share my enthusiasm for Cates. She truly is one of a kind and still looks great today (at 46), btw.

But here she is in her younger days in one of my favorite movies of all time. Also, keep in mind, this video is probably NSFW. Enjoy.

I'm Chris and I Approve of This

I’ve seen a lot of movies over the years and many of them had one or more superheroes in them. Some of those superheroes were also women and probably looked pretty good in their costumes. However, I’m fairly certain none of them ever looked this good.

I give you Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Iron Man 2. You're welcome.

Moving on Up

I’ve moved this blog from hosted Wordpress to my own server also using Wordpress. Yes, I’m that cool and know how to do stuff.

However, due to the migration, things still look a bit wonky and will for a few days until I get time to fix them. So, please bare with me while I finish up the migration.

In the meantime, to thank you for your patience, take a look at this picture featuring a few of my favorite things. Enjoy.

As always, we remember

I’m very lucky to live in a country where I’ve had the opportunity to pursue pretty much whatever dream I saw fit. To those who can no longer follow their dreams, we will not forget you.

Surfing In Malibu

No, it wasn’t me surfing. It was professionals who know what they’re doing. Although, I did surf a bit when I was younger, but never really got very good at it. Also, I’ve tried it again a couple times recently and I’m still not very good at it. So again, I’ll leave it to the pros.

Fortunately, all I had to do at this event over the weekend was try to take some decent pictures. No surfing on my part required. Here's a few taken during the MSA Classic event in Malibu this past weekend. It's the 45th annual contest and one of the beneficiaries of the event was Heal the Bay. All in all, a great way to spend a Saturday.

Because I Can Never Get Enough

Here’s yet another picture of the divine Marissa Miller just in time to be a day late for “Photo Tuesday.” Although, I did give you some great shots of Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff from the BSG press event yesterday – so no complaining, please.

I also realize that having these kind of photos may land me a bit on the pandering side of things. But then again, who cares? She looks purty. And sweaty. And I feel like sharing.

Enjoy.

Me, Me, Me

Yes, its all about me. But seriously folks, this has been a very interesting week. I’ve met a lot of great people, been told my work both sucks and is brilliant and found a great artist I’m going to work with. So, as I said, a very interesting week indeed.

I also went to Book Expo America last weekend here in LA and I just have to say, I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I didn't look around enough or spend enough time there, but it seemed like it wasn't really the show for me. If I was a guy who owned a book store and was looking to buy books to fill it up, then it would have been a great show for me.

As I was just a lowly writer looking to meet some people (particularly in comics and graphic novel publishing) I was sorta out of luck. The few places that were there had booths staffed by people I already knew or featured companies where I already knew someone higher up the chain than the guy in the booth. So, from a practical "networking" standpoint, not much incentive to chat them up.

I did talk to a few people and they were cool. Still, I got the sense from some of them that even they were not exactly sure why they were there. Really, I think most people in comics and graphic novel publishing are just looking ahead to San Diego Comic-Con anyway. I know I am. That's going to be a blast as usual.

In other Con news, I will most-likely be in Chicago for Wizard World later this month with ComicMix Managing Editor Rick Marshall, Editor-In-Chief Mike Gold and some of the other gang. That should be fun, especially as I've never been to Chicago before (I know) and am going to stay a few extra days to check out the city, eat the food and generally get into some trouble.

I'm really looking forward to that trip. If you happen to be in Chicago during that time, be sure to say "hello."

Oh, before I forget, what would a post about me be without some links to my recent work? Here you go:

The latest BSG Weekly at ComicMix

The 'Battlestar Galactica' Women

bsg-girls-1

Battlestar Galactica is a great show. It has exceptional writing, engaging stories, compelling characters, cool visuals, talented actors and directors and is just plain fun to watch. It also has some really great looking women on it – which doesn’t hurt either.

Here’s some recent pictures of the three main BSG Babes from Interview Magazine. Enjoy.

And my personal favorite, Katee Sackhoff

Oh, and if you’re interested in other things BSG-related, don’t forget to check out BSG Weekly over at ComicMix. It’s a fun read, but sadly, only features myself and BSG Co-Executive Producer Mark Verheiden. No babes, sorry.

Sure, that was a shameless plug, but what the hell? This is my blog after all. If you get one of your own you, can plug the heck out of whatever you want.

That’s what makes America great.

That and the Internet, TV shows like BSG, beer, pizza, movies, dogs, freedom, sex, love and the ability to achieve your dreams if you really want them bad enough.

Is this a great country or what?

Photo Tuesday with Princess Leia, Selma Blair, Milo Ventimiglia and More!

Powerful Photographs

These were taken by New York Times photographer John Moore before and during the assignation of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan. All I can say about them is "wow."
