Surfing In Malibu

No, it wasn’t me surfing. It was professionals who know what they’re doing. Although, I did surf a bit when I was younger, but never really got very good at it. Also, I’ve tried it again a couple times recently and I’m still not very good at it. So again, I’ll leave it to the pros.

Fortunately, all I had to do at this event over the weekend was try to take some decent pictures. No surfing on my part required. Here's a few taken during the MSA Classic event in Malibu this past weekend. It's the 45th annual contest and one of the beneficiaries of the event was Heal the Bay. All in all, a great way to spend a Saturday.

Photo a Day - Day 30

Just under the wire, here we are. This is the final photo in my “Photo a Day” thirty days of photos experiment. Some were good, some were just okay and some, well, let’s just say some were not so good.

Still, it was fun to see if I could do it at all and I'm pretty impressed with me for being able to stick with it for the duration. I also think I learned one or two new things about photography, which is great as there's always something to learn.

In fact, I think I enjoyed this experiment so much, I'm going to continue with it and keep taking more pictures. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with 365 days of photos instead of just thirty. Okay, that brings us to the final photo of this series.

Instead of using a picture that I took recently, I've decided to put up one of my favorite photos I took of my father. In case you don't know, he died last October. Consequently, the photos I took of him, especially ones like this taken at one of our favorite bars, are a reminder of the good times we had when livin' was easy.

 Cheers Dad.

Photo a Day - Day 29

Getting even closer now to the end. This is the second to last photo of the “Photo a Day” event. Exciting, yes? I know I’m feeling it.

Photo a Day - Day 28

Wow, only two more days to go on this thing. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I would make it this far. But hey, guess I was wrong. Kudos to me and all that stuff.

Photo a Day - Day 27

Getting close to the end here. Very exciting times indeed. Only three more days to go. Although, I am enjoying it quite a bit, so maybe I’ll extend it a few extra days for fun. Who knows? Until then, here you go.

Photo a Day - Day 26

I’m a man of few words today except to say “Happy Labor Day.”

Photo a Day - Day 25

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. A good day and a good day to post a new photo. This time around it’s a macro shot I thought I would try and see what happens. Twenty-five down, five to go.

Michael Mann's 'Lucky Star'

Here’s an interesting fake trailer for a movie called ‘Lucky Star’ that’s actually a commercial for the Mercedes SL500. Made in 2002, starring Benecio Del Toro and directed by Michael Mann, its one of the longest and most expensive commercials ever made. Sadly, I did not work on it. However, even without my involvement, it’s still pretty damn cool – mostly because Mann is pretty much a genius.

Photo a Day - Day 24

Happy weekend everyone once again. Hope you’re having a great one and that you are enjoying the Labor Day holiday. If so, how about a beer or a margarita? Of course, whatever you end up doing, be safe out there. Cheers.

 Twenty-four down, six to go.

Photo a Day - Day 23

Happy long weekend everyone. I’m sure that during these three days off you will probably have many opportunities to take interesting photographs. I’m sure I will also.

However, I still need a photo for today, so here it is. Yes, that's a commercial jet on the left and a military helicopter on the right. Twenty-three down, nine to go.

Photo a Day - Day 22

This photo was taken during an event in Santa Monica to call attention to U.S. casualties of the Iraq war. One cross or other faith-appropriate marker per dead soldier. For me, seeing all the markers spread across the beach, numbering over four thousand, was a powerful reminder of the human cost of war.

Photo a Day - Day 21

Because its election season and the Democratic Convention is going on this week, I thought it was appropriate to show a photo somehow related to these historic events. So, in the spirit of democracy, here’s a picture of a couple of Obama’s younger supporters, out on a Sunday, working to register people to vote and giving away Obama stickers. Good for them. Is this a great country, or what? Twenty-one down, nine to go.

Photo a Day - Day 20

Another milestone folks ‘cause here we are at day twenty of thirty. Not bad for a guy who basically hasn’t stuck to much of anything all his life – except maybe his love of Sci-Fi and Craftsman Beers.

Anyway, enough of that. Here's the latest pic. Twenty down, ten to go.

Photo a Day - Day 19

Had a fun photo shoot at the Santa Monica Pier yesterday. There was an event at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium (which is run by my favorite non-profit Heal the Bay) so I went down to cover the event and also take some photos at the pier – which always has some interesting people and things to see.

One of the components of yesterday's event was a simulated rescue of a person who has jumped, or fell, off the pier. Here's a photo for today's "Photo a Day" of the person who needs to be "rescued" in mid-jump. I thought it was kinda cool. Nineteen down, eleven to go.

Photo a Day - Day 18

Woot. This is the eighteenth day of photos. They say photos can be inspirational. You gotta love that. So, without further to do, here’s the picture that inspired me the other day.

Photo a Day - Day 17

Another day, another photo. I’ll keep it short today as I’m on my way out the door to do some actual work. Surprised? Yeah, me too. Thirty minus seventeen equals thirteen.

Photo a Day - Day 16

I thought for today I would try another black and white photo. For some reason, I really like the look of black and white – almost more than I like color. Not completely sure why, but I’m just going to go with it for now. Anyway, here’s the latest picture in the series. Sixteen down, fourteen to go.

Photo a Day - Day 15

Let’s play a game, shall we? No, not ‘Global Thermonuclear War’ – this isn’t an early eighties Matthew Broderick movie. Instead, let’s play a game where I pretend I can count and you pretend that I can too. How fun will that be? I’m guessing quite a bit. Although, I’m probably biased, so who knows?

Anyway, here's the latest in a virtually unbroken series of photos which are part of my "Photo a Day" project. If you're tempted not to play nice or otherwise not play the game along with everyone else, please keep some vital things in mind.

Any change, no matter how slight, takes time and effort. Sometimes, you have one but not the other. And sometimes, you don't have either one. And sometimes, you just get distracted by something shiny.

But, if your intentions are good, once in a while people can, and should, throw you a bone and overlook the blatant gaps in your plan. At least that's how I see it.

Okay, let's see how the second half goes. Fifteen down, fifteen to go.

Photo a Day - Day 14

No comments or witty banter this time around as I’m just plain worn out from various fun activities. Here’s the latest picture.

Photo a Day - Day 13

Due to circumstances beyond my control (ok, I forgot the cable to download pictures to my MacBook) I’m going to post a photo for today that was not taken today. It was, however, taken by me recently, so that’s almost as good, right?

Anyway, here's a picture of my friend Matt Raub with non-other than Freddy Kruger himself, Robert Englund. Good times. And yes, I realize I posted this photo once before -- but not during the "photo a day" festivities, so it doesn't really count. Thirteen(ish) down, seventeen to go.

Again, my sincere apologies for the transgression. I shall endeavor not to forget things in the future. . . . Wait, what were we talking about?
